Berdine's Five and Dime

In 1908, at the height of an overnight oil and gas boom in the small town of Harrisville, West Virginia, a legacy began. Brothers K.C. and Lafayette Berdine had recently relocated to the small town with the hopes of establishing a thriving five-and-dime store.

Over a hundred years later, Berdine’s Five and Dime is a thriving pilgrimage of nostalgia, transporting visitors back to simpler times. Old-timey shaving soaps, mason jars, dice, bobblehead dolls of famous figures like Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, and hundreds of other tchotchkes fill the shelves at this beloved country store.

Perhaps the biggest draw is Berdine’s candy counter, with shelves stocked with a wide variety of confections and candies from chocolate-covered walnuts and pretzels to orange slices. The vintage scale, which the store still uses to weigh candy sales, starts at 10 cents per pound and tops out at 60 cents per pound.
