“The Fellowship of the Loneliest Road” (the “Fellowship”) will award one artist with a full stipend to traverse Route 50, from Ely to Carson City—solo. In addition to airfare and a rental car, Atlas Obscura (“Atlas”) will provide the recipient with $5,000 for lodging and other incidentals. While on the five-day trip, the artist is expected to create a travelogue documenting the experience and artistic process. Upon returning home, Atlas will work with the artist to display the completed body of work on Atlas and Sponsor’s channels.


The ATLAS OBSCURA: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE LONELIEST ROAD (“Contest”) is open only to legal residents of the United States and the District of Columbia, excluding its territories and possessions, age 21 or older at the time of entry. Void where otherwise taxed, prohibited or restricted by law. Officers, directors and employees of Sponsor, Atlas Obscura (“Atlas”), their parents, subsidiaries, and affiliates; individuals or entities responsible for the development, printing, distribution and implementation of this contest; and individuals who are employees of or members of the immediate family or household, whether or not related, of any of the foregoing are not eligible to enter to win. Contest is subject to all applicable Federal, state and local laws and regulations.


The Contest will begin on May 1, 2017 at 10:00AM Eastern Daylight Time (“EDT”) and end on May 19, 2017 at 10:00PM EDT. To be eligible, all entries must be received by May 19, 2017 at 10:00PM EDY (the “Contest Entry Period”).

  • May 1st–May 19th: Entry period begins/closes
  • May 23rd: Atlas judges entries and identifies potential winner and two runners up
  • May 30th: Sponsor selects potential winner in consultation with Atlas
  • May 31st: Atlas contacts potential winner and gathers necessary information
  • June 5th: Winner announced by Atlas on its social media platforms

Only Entries received during the Contest Entry Period and which are otherwise fully compliant with these Official Rules are “Valid Entries.” Limit one (1) Entry per person, per e-mail address per day. A “day” is defined as 12:00:01 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time though 11:59:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Entrants may enter the contest using one (1) valid name or e-mail address only. In the event of a dispute involving Entries submitted by multiple individuals using the same email account, the Entry will be deemed to have been submitted by the authorized subscriber of the email account used to enter the contest at the time of entry. The authorized account subscriber is defined as the natural person who is assigned to an email address by the relevant Internet access provider, online service provider or other organization responsible for assigning email addresses for the domain associated with the submitted email address and he/she must fully comply with these Official Rules. Entries from any person, email address, or household in excess of the above-stated entry limit are prohibited and will void all Entries by that entrant. Entrants expressly agree to assume the risk of lost, late, incomplete, garbled, damaged, delayed, illegible, stolen, undelivered or misdirected Entries and acknowledge that Released Parties (as defined below) are not responsible for such Entries.

Submission Guidelines:

All Contest, participants must adhere to the following:

  • All participants must complete either the online entry form or submit by mail the answers to the questions from the entry form on the Web Site.
  • All participants must in 300 words or less tell us why they would like to take part in the Contest and the work (the “Work”) they plan to produce as the winner of the Contest.
  • All participants must provide three website links to relevant samples of their past work.
  • All participants may choose to further articulate how their submitted past work applies to the Contest.
  • All participants must identify five things they would like to do on Route 50.
  • All participants must submit a plan for how they would execute their Work in the five-day course of the journey and in the immediate aftermath.
  • All participants must identify what equipment / materials they plan to bring on the road.
  • All participants must provide their full name; primary phone number; email address; current street address, state, and zip code; date of birth; Instagram handle (if applicable); Twitter handle (if applicable); and personal blog or website (if applicable).
  • All participants must confirm that they have a valid US driver’s license, are available to travel for the Contest between the days of July 10th and July 15th, 2017, and are available for infrequent phone calls with Atlas between July 15th and August 30th, 2017.
  • All participants must confirm they are willing to have the Work they produce for the Contest displayed on Atlas Obscura and Sponsors’ channels in perpetuity as part of the Loneliest Road program (the “Program”). Such display will be at the sole discretion of Atlas and Sponsor. Such display will not include within paid commercial advertisements, with the exception of display media on Atlas Obscura supporting the Program and paid social posts in support of the Program. Display of the work within such promotional usage will be at the sole discretion of Altas and Sponsor.

Submissions will be judged based on both the quality of the previous creative work and the quality of the Entry and proposal for the new Work. These shall be judged by a panel (the “Panel”) of qualified judges appointed by Atlas, according to the following judging criteria (the “Judging Criteria”):

  1. The originality of the proposal – 25%
  2. The feasibility of the proposal – 25%
  3. The plan to integrate Route 50/Nevada in to the Work – 25%
  4. The Work’s efficacy on digital channels – 25%

In the case of a tie, the submission with the highest score for Judging Criteria c, integrating Nevada in to the Work, will be chosen.

Selection of Winner:

On or May 23rd, 2017, the Panel will supply Sponsor with one potential winner and two (2) runners up form all valid Entries in accordance with the Judging Criteria. On or about May 30th, 2017 Sponsor will select potential winner in consultation with Atlas and in accordance with the Judging Criteria. Atlas will determine, at its sole discretion, which Entries are deemed valid, and Atlas’ decision will be final in all respects.

Winner Notification:

Potential winners will be notified by email or telephone using the information provided on such potential winners’ Entries on or about May 31st, 2017 (“Prize Notification”). Contest participants are responsible for providing Atlas with any changes in the participant’s contact information occurring after the date of participant’s Contest submission. Prize Notification by telephone and/or email shall be deemed to have occurred on the date Atlas or Atlas’ designee first attempts to make email and/or telephone contact with a potential winner. In order to receive the Prize (as defined below), potential winners must provide their social security number to Atlas and will also be required to sign an affidavit or certification of eligibility and publicity/liability release within three (3) business days of the date of initial Prize Notification, or an alternate potential winner will be selected at Atlas’ sole discretion. If any prospective potential winner is found to be ineligible for any reason, an alternate potential winner may be selected at Atlas’ sole discretion. If Prize Notification is returned as undeliverable, it will result in disqualification, and the Prize may be awarded to an alternate potential winner selected at Atlas’ sole discretion. Any non-response by a potential winner or Atlas’ failure to receive a response from any potential winner within the prescribed three (3) business day period will result in disqualification of such potential winner and the selection of an alternate potential winner in Atlas’ sole discretion and time permitting. In the event Atlas is unable to contact a potential winner or if a potential winner is non-compliant with these Official Rules, the potential winner will be disqualified and an alternate potential winner will be selected. Atlas is not responsible for unsuccessful efforts to notify any potential winner. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the potential winners and any alternate potential winners are collectively referred to herein as the “Winner.”


  • One (1) Winner shall have the opportunity to receive the funding amount of $5,000.00 to be used toward funding the participant’s project as described in the participant’s submission, as part of the Program.
  • Winner shall also receive a plane ticket from the airport closest to Winner’s home city in the Continental US to Salt Lake City, Utah or Reno, Nevada, as well as return ticket from Salt Lake City, Utah or Reno, Nevada to the same airport closest to Winner’s home city. Flight times, dates, carrier, fare class, and departure and arrival airports will be chosen at the sole discretion of Atlas. Winner is responsible for all travel expenses to and from the departure airport.
  • Winner shall also receive a pre-paid rental car for use during the Fellowship, from July 10th to July 15th, 2017, with dates subject to reasonable change at the sole discretion of Atlas. Winner shall be responsible for all other travel and accommodation expenses during the Fellowship, including gas, tolls, food, rental car insurance, and lodging.

The total value of all prizes is approximately $7,500.00.

Any costs, expenses or incidentals associated with Prize acceptance and use not specified herein as being provided are the responsibility of the Winner, including, without limitation, all Federal, state, local and income taxes. Winners may also have their Work featured in other media outlets determined by Atlas.

General Prize Conditions:

Prizes are awarded “as is” with no warranty or guarantee, either expressed or implied by Atlas. No transfers, cash redemption, or substitutions are permitted, except that Atlas reserves the right to substitute a Prize (or portion thereof) with one of comparable or greater value in its sole and absolute discretion. Prize award is subject to verification of eligibility and compliance with these Official Rules. Any and all Federal, state and local taxes on Prizes, and any other costs, fees and expenses not explicitly stated herein as being awarded are the sole responsibility of the Winners.

Atlas reserves the right to conduct a background check, including but not limited to criminal history on Prize Winners. To the extent required by law, Prize Winners shall authorize this check.


By participating, all entrants warrant and represent that their entries are their own original work and that they have complied in full with these Official Rules, including but not limited to all eligibility requirements, and further agree to be bound by these Official Rules and the decisions of Atlas, which are final and binding in all respects. All Entry materials become the property of Atlas and will not be returned or acknowledged. Photocopies, facsimiles, illegible, incomplete or mechanically reproduced Entries are not eligible. Entry materials that have been tampered with or altered, mass Entries or Entries generated automatically or robotically, or by a script, macro or use of any automated or mechanical device(s) or practices, or any other means which subvert the entry process are void. Atlas, its affiliates, parents, subsidiaries, divisions and/or advertising or sweepstakes agencies, individuals or entities responsible for the development, printing, distribution and implementation of this Contest, and each of their respective employees, officers, directors and agents, including Sponsor (collectively, the “Released Parties”) are not responsible for: (i) lost, late, misdirected, damaged, illegible or postage due entries; (ii) error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, delay in operations or transmission, theft or destruction or unauthorized access to or alterations of Entry materials, or for technical, network, telephone equipment, electronic, mechanical, typographical, printing, computer, hardware or software malfunctions or errors of any kind, or inaccurate transmission of or failure to receive entry information by Atlas; (iii) hardware or software errors; faulty computer, telephone, cable, satellite, network, cellular towers, electronic, wireless or Internet connectivity or other online communication problems; errors or limitations of any Internet service providers, servers, hosts or providers; garbled, jumbled, scrambled, delayed or faulty data transmission entries; failure of any e-mail transmissions to be sent or received; lost, late, delayed or intercepted e-mail transmissions; inaccessibility of the Web Site in whole or in part for any reason; traffic congestion on the Internet or the Web Site; unauthorized human or non-human intervention of the operation of the Contest, including without limitation, unauthorized tampering, hacking, theft, virus, bugs, worms; or destruction of any aspect of the Contest, or loss, miscount, misdirection, inaccessibility or unavailability of an email account used in connection with the Contest; or (iv) any injury or damage to entrant’s or any other person’s computer or other device related to or resulting from entering or otherwise participating in the Contest or downloading materials from or use of a Web Site. Released Parties are also not responsible for any other errors in connection with the Contest, including, without limitation, errors or problems in connection with the administration of the Contest, the processing of Entries, uploading of any Entry, the announcement of the Winners or typographical, printing or other errors in these Official Rules or in any Contest-related materials. Entrants agree to release the Released Parties from and against any and all claims in connection with Atlas’ selection of the finalists and Atlas’ and Sponsor’s selection of the Winners. Atlas reserves the right to withdraw and terminate, or modify, the administration of the Contest if it becomes technically corrupted, if a computer virus or system malfunction impairs its ability to conduct the Contest, or if the online entry method otherwise becomes impossible, impractical, infeasible for any other reason. If for any reason the Contest is not capable of running as planned, including without limitation, infection by computer virus, bugs, tampering, unauthorized intervention, fraud, technical failures, or any other causes which corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper conduct of the Contest, Atlas reserves the right, at its sole discretion to cancel, suspend, modify or terminate the Contest.

By participating in the Contest, each entrant agrees to release, defend, indemnify and hold harmless Released Parties from and against any and all claims, demands, expenses, losses and liabilities of any nature whatsoever caused or contributed to by: (i) entering or participating in the Contest (including any claims of third parties alleging infringement, rights of publicity, rights of privacy or defamation or other intellectual property rights); (ii) the acceptance, use or misuse of any Prize; and/or (iii) participation in any Prize-related activities or travel. By participating in the Contest and accepting a Prize, entrant irrevocably grants to Atlas and its designees, the unconditional and perpetual right and permission to use the entrant's name, address (city and state), image, voice, likeness, statements, biographical material and entry/submission, including, but not limited to any video, still image, likeness, photos, names, special effects or digital or other recording, performances or other material contained in such Entry, as submitted or as edited, altered or modified in any way by Atlas or their designees in Atlas’ sole discretion) as well as any additional photographic images, video images, portraits, interviews or other materials relating to the entrant and arising from his/her participation in this Contest in any and all media now known or hereafter devised, throughout the world in perpetuity (unless prohibited by law). Such usage will not include within paid commercial advertisements, with the exception of display media on Atlas Obscura supporting the Program and paid social posts in support of the Program. Entrant further agrees to release, indemnify and hold harmless Atlas and Released Parties from any and all claims that any commercial, advertising, presentation, web content or any other material subsequently produced, presented and/or prepared by or on behalf of Atlas which incorporates all or any portion of entrant’s Contest submission infringes on the rights of entrant’s work as contained in any submitted entry.


By entering, each entrant warrants and represents (i) that any individual featured or visible in entrant’s Entry/submission is at least 18 years of age or older at the time the entry was initially shot or otherwise prepared; (ii) that the entrant owns all rights to the submission he/she is entering in this Contest, including, without limitation, any intellectual property rights, video or digital recording, and any performance contained in entrant’s submission, with the exception of any Atlas or Sponsor brand assets provided or made available by Atlas or the Sponsor for use by entrants in connection with this Contest; (iii) that the entrant is the individual pictured and/or heard in the submission, or, alternatively, that the entrant has obtained permission from each and every person appearing in the submission, granting full exhibition rights to Atlas and the Sponsor as described in these Official Rules, and can make written copies of such permissions available to Atlas and the Sponsor upon request; and (iv) that his/her submission(s): (a) is original to the entrant and has been legally obtained and created, (b) does not infringe the intellectual property, privacy or publicity rights or any other legal or moral rights of any third party, or violate applicable laws, rules regulations, or network standards; and (c) has not been entered in or won any previous contests or awards. By submitting an entry/submission, entrant warrants and represents that he/she consents to the submission and use of the entry/submission in this Contest and to its use as otherwise set forth herein.


Each entry must be suitable for display and publication in all forms of media, including but not limited to the internet, the World Wide Web, print, radio, and network, cable or satellite television broadcast. Accordingly, entries may not contain, as determined by Atlas, in its sole discretion, any content that: (i) is derogatory; (ii) is offensive, including but not limited to words or symbols that might be considered offensive to individuals of any race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or socioeconomic group; (iii) portrays Atlas’ or Sponsor’s brands in any way that may give rise to public contempt, scandal, disrepute or ridicule or that defames, misrepresents or contains disparaging remarks about Atlas or Sponsor or other people or companies; (iv) contains trademarks, logos, or trade dress (such as distinctive packaging or building exteriors/interiors) owned by others; contains any personal identification; (v) contains copyrighted materials owned by others (including songs, photographs, sculptures, paintings, and other works of art or images published on or in websites, television, movies or other media); (vi) contains materials embodying the names, likenesses, voices, or other indicia identifying any person, including, without limitation, celebrities and/or other public or private figures, living or dead; or (vii) violates any law. Atlas reserves the right to make determinations of suitability in its sole and absolute discretion, and to disqualify any entries it determines to be inappropriate for any of the reasons listed above, or for any other reason.

Assignment of Rights:

If entrant’s submission is judged a potential winner, entrant may be required to execute such documents as may be required by Atlas to use the resulting Work and the Entry in the Program and on its platforms and Sponsor’s platforms. Entrant will retain copyright and ownership of the Work and of the Entry, though entrant will agree to not license said Work or Entry for any commercial programs for a period of at least two (2) years. Entrant will irrevocably assign in perpetuity to Atlas and Sponsor rights to use the Work on their owned and operated platforms, including their websites, social media feeds, marketing platforms, and all other forms of media, digital, prints, or otherwise. Such usage will not include within paid commercial advertisements, with the exception of display media on Atlas Obscura supporting the Program and paid social posts in support of the Program. Entrant will irrevocably assign in perpetuity to Atlas the rights to use Work and Entry for any case studies, award entries, or other promotional efforts by Atlas to market itself and its services to future advertising or brand partners. Entrant forever waives all legal and moral rights that might preclude Atlas’ or the Sponsor’s use, alteration or modification of the Work or Entry for the purposes outlined here and agrees to never sue or assert any claim against Atlas or the Sponsor or any entity acting pursuant to Atlas’ or Sponsor’s direction for any use, alteration of Work and Entry.

This Contest shall be governed by and interpreted under the laws of the State of New York, U.S.A. without regard to its conflicts of laws provisions. By participating, entrants agree that any and all disputes arising out of or relating in any way to this Contest shall be litigated only in courts sitting in New York, NY, U.S.A. The New York courts (State and Federal) shall have sole jurisdiction of any controversies regarding the Contest and the laws of the State of New York shall govern the Contest. Each entrant waives any and all objections to jurisdiction and venue in these courts and hereby submits to the jurisdiction of these courts.
