Building things in the world’s wettest place is difficult:Wood rots, metal rusts, and stone crumbles with all of that moisture. However, finding a way to cross the fast flowing mountain rivers was important.

The Khasi tribe of Cherrapuni, India, however, found a rather brilliant solution. Instead of working against the environment, the Khasi built their bridge so that it will not only survive the weather but grow stronger over time. Using the roots of the local rubber fig tree, they grow their bridges. These living root bridges can be up to 100 feet long and support the weight of over 50 people. With tourism drawing people to the visit the root bridges, the Khasi have even more reason to grow and support these incredible pieces of “arbortecture”
