During this intimate daytime session inside the New York Academy of Medicine's beautiful rare book room, we'll be guided by two stewards as we look through a selection of the wondrous culinary collection.
How did the family dinner change in America during wartime, or after the advent of the gas range? What early Italian cookbook has the earliest known depiction of a fork? The Academy's marvelous cookery collection has over 10,000 items, including cookbooks, menus, pamphlets, and other food ephemera.
This session will highlight food treasures from the collection, including the 9th-century Roman cookery manuscript, Apicius' De Re Coquinaria, generally acknowledged to be the oldest surviving cookbook in the West. Perhaps you'll even discover a few unusual recipes to try later at home!
