A vast collection of artifacts and ephemera from matchbooks and postcards to vintage neon signs and cars.
On OBSCURA DAY Saturday, May 30, join Field Agent Sandi Hemmerlein for a tour of the Valley Relics Museum in Chatsworth, led by the museum's own curator and founder, Tommy Gelinas. All are welcome – whether or not you're a true Valley Girl or Guy – to join the Los Angeles Obscura Society in perusing the museum's collection of salvaged signage and other glorious gems of commercial archaeology, including some Chipmunks, Pep Boys, and even a Big Boy. Relics are literally hanging from the ceiling and stacked against the walls, all surrounding a sweet classic car which serves as the centerpiece for the collection.
We'll hear the fascinating stories behind each item from Gelinas, a lifetime Valley resident who was born in Burbank and currently calls Sherman Oaks home. Pretty much everything he's brought to Valley Relics is a treasure of businesses that have either closed or are still in operation, like rescued signs from Henry's Tacos in Studio City and Alda Dena Dairy in Burbank.
Explore the secret histories of the Valley's past, get a good dose of nostalgia, and geek out on some really cool antique signs.
