Obscura Society LA: The Institute of Figuring

Join Obscura Society LA as we learn how to make math a little bit easier and a lot more three dimensional

  • Date: April 20, 2013
  • Time: 11:00 AM to 01:00 PM, Eastern Time (US & Canada)
  • Cost: 17.00

For most of us, math is hard. And boring. But that's why the Institute of Figuring was founded.

Margaret Wertheim, the founder of the Institute of Figuring and renowned mathematician, recognized the need to make math and science easier to understand for kids and adults alike by using a more hands-on approach. So, by allowing vistors to literally "play" with concepts, shapes, and models, they can gain a better understanding of the geometric world around them.

Join Obscura Society LA and field agent Robert Hemedes on a private, exclusive tour of this wonderful museum. Our guide will be no other than the museum founder, Margaret Wertheim, herself.  We will see their current exhibit, titled ‘Making Space,’ which offers a look into what space means, both here on earth and beyond.

After the tour, everyone will be invited to stay to build their own 3D mathematical models and construct/design fractal-inspired sculptures using 60,000 specifically designed business cards!

What happens when art and geometry combine? We invite you to join us in exploring this museum and seeing what we can learn and, most importantly, how we can create with math.

Details:

-Tour begins promptly at 3 pm, so please arrive a few minutes early.
