The Poison Cauldron of the Newtown Creek

Explore the hellish waste transfer and petroleum districts of North Brooklyn on this daring walk towards the doomed Kosciuszko Bridge.

This fascinating three-hour tour will take you around three miles of Greenpoint, crossing the heart of the massively tragic oil spill. We will be heading for the thrice damned Kosciuszko Bridge, which is in the process of being replaced piece-by-piece.

There's a reason that Newtown Creek Alliance Historian Mitch Waxman calls this "The Poison Cauldron." DUKBO —Down Under the Kosciuszko Bridge Onramp—is the hellscape where the waste transfer and petroleum districts of North Brooklyn are found, along the bulkheads of the Federal Superfund site called Newtown Creek.

Those interested in New York City's underground history will find themselves delighted. Photographers, in particular, will find this an interesting trek across an industrial section of New York City. At the start, you may think we've overstated the conditions—but by the end, you'll be struck by the apocalyptic landscapes lurking in your own backyard.
