The Soldiers and Sailors Arch sits at the center of Grand Army Plaza as a monument to the Union Army, but its imposing exterior gives little indication as to the contents of its interior.

Little do passers-by know, sitting just behind the entrance at the base of the arch is a storage and display space for the former puppet lending library.

That’s right, since 2005 The Puppeteers’ Cooperative has been using the massive interior to store their vast array of puppets. Both large and small, the goofy characters—ranging anywhere from goofy animal puppets to life-size people puppets—can be gawked at, played with or even borrowed for a week or two.

Update September 2016: The Puppet Library is now located in Boston at Emmanuel Church.
