I love the American South because of the aggressive contrast between its wild and ragged landscapes and the many interesting and sometimes beautiful ways people have tried to make it their own. From DeSoto and Ponce de Leon, to kidnapped slaves, to elite Southern family dynasties and "New South" transplants, this area has more chapters in its complicated history than I could ever fully learn, but I enjoy each new discovery.
