Avatar Grove
This patch of old-growth forest is home to Canada's gnarliest tree.
This entry is a stub
A several-hour drive from Victoria, British Columbia, is a hidden grove with Canada’s gnarliest tree. This magnificent forest is located within the traditional territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation. The old-growth forest is filled with massive cedar and fir trees, some with trunks that measure 14 or 15 feet wide. Though their exact ages are unknown, the oldest trees are estimated to be around 1,000 years old.
Avatar Grove is split into two sections, an upper and a lower. Once you begin to walk up the stairs you feel as if you are entering another realm. The forest is stunningly quiet, the trees are filled with handmade art, and the end of the trail leads you to the large grandmother tree. Not many travel here because the way is long, but it’s a special experience you should not miss.
Know Before You Go
Do not go in the winter, the road floods and snow can be high. When encountering a one lane bridge, please be courteous and patient. You will encounter a gravel road so having 4 x 4 or all wheel drive is preferable. Local guides are available to transport you there.
