Traveling Solo?

You’re in good company. Solo travelers typically make up about half of our small groups. With curiosity at the center of our experiences, there’s a natural camaraderie that develops over the course of a trip. We have two options for you:

Shared Room (subject to the latest Covid-19 guidelines): You'll be matched with another solo traveler of the same gender.

Private Room: Have your own room, subject to availability, for a supplemental cost of $425. After booking your trip, please request a private room when you fill out your traveler information form and we’ll add the option to your booking and final balance.

Activity Level

This trip involves moderate to strenuous hiking excursions to view the root bridges over hilly, jungle terrain. Participants should feel comfortable walking up to 6 or 7 hours per day on hilly, uneven paths with naturally-formed root and stone steps. The most challenging hike will last approximately 3.5 hours traveling uphill while carrying a backpack with 2 days worth of clothing and gear. Participants will be required to store most luggage in Cherrapunji and carry a backpack with essentials to the homestay in Nongriat (Days 3-5).

Arrival & Departure

This tour begins on Day 1 in Guwahati. There are several daily flight options to Guwahati from Kolkata or Delhi and our local representative will meet you at the Guwahati airport on arrival. We recommend booking your flight to arrive by 1:00 p.m. so you have time to check-in at the hotel and settle in before meeting the group and your tour leader for the afternoon visit to the Maa Kamakhya temple. The tour ends on Day 10 and you can book your outbound flight with departure any time that day.

Accommodations

This trip travels to remote locations in Meghalaya, India, where we will be making use of the best available accommodations. These are generally local hotels and guesthouses of international 3* quality. This itinerary does include a 2-night homestay, where accommodations will be clean but basic. Rooms will accommodate single or double occupancy in twin beds. There are shared bathroom facilities with Indian-style squat toilets. While there is running water for washing, separate drinking water will be provided during the homestay. The food served here will be basic and consists of local vegetarian & non-vegetarian dishes.

Transportation

We will be traveling around India in one or two (depending on group size) 12-14 seater mini-buses. These vehicles are climate-controlled, but given the mountainous terrain we will be traversing, there will be some stretches where the air-conditioning will have to be turned off. On most days the driving time will be an hour or less, but there are a few days with a significant amount of driving on windy roads for 3 - 5 hours.
