Assembly: Underground Films and Philly Legends

A one-of-a-kind screening of films and rare archival footage celebrating Philadelphia’s underground art and unsung heroes, held in a historic high school auditorium.

Join Atlas Obscura for a one-of-a-kind screening of short films and rare archival footage celebrating Philadelphia’s prolific history of underground art and unsung heroes. Staged in the BOK Building, a historic vocational high school turned vibrant workspace, Assembly will educate and entertain audiences with screenings by local film experts and feature a complimentary concession bar of deluxe movie treats, a super slow-motion video booth, and exclusive perks for Chase Sapphire® cardmembers.

Note, this is the first public screening in the beautiful, Art Deco auditorium at BOK. Because the space is scheduled for future renovations, Assembly is a rare opportunity to experience this historic Philadelphia site in its original state.

FILMAKERS AND PRESENTERS

Ricardo Rivera, founder and director of Klip Collective, a creative studio located in the BOK building that produces site-specific, articulated light and sound experiences. He will open the evening with a short talk on his stunning work as well as the history and future of BOK.

Brendan Lowry, better known for his Instagram account Peopledelphia, and one of the most prolific documenters of everyday Philadelphians. Brendan will present a series of original video vignettes that document the legends that walk among us.

Girls Rock Philly, a youth-centered music organization dedicated to building an intergenerational community of girls, women, and trans and gender non-conforming people. Samantha Rise, program director, will be showcasing films of a little-known local legend and notable up-and-comers.

Jay Schwartz, a collector and screener of neglected films since 1992. His “Secret Cinema” specializes in showing forgotten films on old-school film equipment, and he will be bringing in his personal projector to screen a 1960s film by a Philadelphia dance icon.

Symphony for a Broken Orchestra, a project to save and repair the thousands of broken and unplayable musical instruments currently owned by the School District of Philadelphia. Sarah Biemiller, Associate Director of Temple Contemporary, will discuss the genesis of the project and share footage of the journey to the ultimate performance.

Nick Carr, a renowned film location scout. Nick will close the evening by showing how the local setting transforms the scene by juxtaposing his original photographs of Philadelphia film locations with iconic film clips from 1980s and 1990s cult classics.

ABOUT BOK

BOK is a historic vocational school, built in 1938 in a stunning Art Deco design. During its 75 years in operation, the school taught a variety of trades including culinary arts, bricklaying, machine building, tailoring, and computers/networking. Since it was closed by the school district of Philadelphia, the vocational spaces have been restored and repurposed into a workspace for local businesses. Nearly 80% of the current tenants are residents of South Philly.
