Beidler Made Bookbinding

Tour the private studio of a historically inspired bookbinder to learn the craft and artistry of creating commonplace books.

Brien Beidler of Beidler Made is a bookbinder and tool maker who works out of his home studio in Bloomington, Indiana. From the beginning, he has been inspired by historic bindings, and is consistently delighted by their ability to harmonize fine craftsmanship, quirky but elegant aesthetics, and evidence of the hands that made them. Though traditionally structured and bound with integrity, Brien's bindings seek ways to create new compositions and juxtapositions of these historic precedents.

Join Brien for an Obscura Day tour of his home studio where he will discuss the making of commonplace books, which are blank books that have been used for over 700 years as a means for individuals to record and organize their thoughts and keep all the loose threads of daily life in one place. Brien will also demonstrate various parts of the process, including sewing, covering in leather, and, time permitting, gold tooling. Coffee, tea, and a few treats will be provided.
