Book Arts With Sandra Kroupa

Explore the University of Washington's Special Collections with rare books curator Sandra Kroupa.

Join Seattle Obscura Society Head Shin Yu Pai for a special visit with Sandra Kroupa, Curator of Book Arts and Rare Books at the University of Washington's Special Collections.

In this two-hour program, we'll visit with Sandra to learn about the medium of book arts and see examples from the collection spanning Pacific Northwest book artists, non-adhesive bindings, innovative structures, and other treasures from the archives. We'll consider the definition of the word “book” examining features that include structure, text, and image, alongside the complementary crafts of bookbinding, typography, papermaking, book design, paper decoration, illustration, letterpress, and offset printing.

University of Washington Libraries' Special Collections collects, preserves and makes accessible rare books, manuscripts, papers, records, photographs, moving images and architectural drawings.
