Atlas Obscura: An Explorer's Guide to the World's Hidden Wonders

Join us as we celebrate our book release and the world's hidden wonders at the Metropolitan Waterworks Museum!

Join us in Boston at the historical Waterworks Museum as we celebrate the release of the very first Atlas Obscura book: Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders!

On Wednesday, September 28th, as part of Waterworks Wednesdays, we're inviting you into this former 19th-century pumping station for a presentation on the world's most unusual and wondrous locations. Join Atlas Obscura founders Joshua Foer and Dylan Thuras and co-author Ella Morton for an evening highlighting the most astonishing and curious locations featured in the book. In a sense, you'll be experiencing the Explorer's Guide from the inside: the Waterworks Museum, with its towering and aging machinery, is one of the awe-inspiring locations found within the pages! Other wonders include:

  • A fire that’s been burning in the Turkmenistan desert for 40 years.
  • Thousands of synchronized fireflies that inexplicably flash in unison in a cluster of mangrove trees outside Kuala Lumpur.
  • The self-mummifying monks of Japan.
  • The world’s only museum dedicated to displaying art made from human hair.

From the Glowworm Caves of New Zealand to the bioluminescent squid of Toyama Bay, each entry includes location information and tips on when and how best to get there—and how much to bribe the guard to get you inside. An immersive cabinet of curiosities that’s meant to inspire wonderlust as much as wanderlust by sharing places that could never be found without a tip from someone in the know, Atlas Obscura proves that the world is vast and there are marvelous treasures behind every corner—if you just know where to look.

Join us early for a VIP Cocktail Hour!
If you sign up for the VIP experience, you will be granted early entry and receive a signed copy of the book. From 6:30-7:30pm, you can enjoy an open beer and wine bar, hors d'oeuvres, and an intimate opportunity to meet and chat with the authors. At 7:30pm, doors will open to other guests, with a presentation of the book taking place at 8pm. Limited to 50 guests.
