Far East LA: Exploring Chinatown

Venture into the history, culture, and kitsch of LA’s Chinatown.

When the original Chinatown was demolished to make way for Union Station, Hollywood set designers were called on to create a fantastical version of Shanghai right here in Los Angeles. Despite its less-than-authentic origin, Chinatown evolved into a major center of commerce and community.

Join Atlas Obscura and Field Agent Adam Papagan for a walking tour of one of the city's most unique districts. We’ll hear the story of the Asian-American entrepreneurs who flourished in the area, see charming examples of mid-century exotic architecture, and learn about the hip art galleries and restaurants that are quickly transforming the neighborhood—the orient as only LA could do it. It's Chinatown!
