When the prolific illustrator and author Edward Gorey died in 2000, the floors of his home sagged under the weight of 25,000 books, several cats, assorted collections of eclectic items gathered over the course of years at Saturday flea market outings, as well as 75 unpublished manuscripts. Lucky for the world, rather then parceling these all out, the illustrator's home and collection have been converted into a museum dedicated to his life and works.
This Obscura Day, explore the Edward Gorey House on an exclusive tour that includes additional access to the typically off-limits Gorey House Barn. Inside the barn, visitors will have a rare opportunity to view the sets from PBS Mystery! and items from Gorey’s collections that were unable to fit within the main house, including his video collections, yard sale art, theatrical props, ceramics, and large architectural and machinery pieces. Following the tour visitors are welcome to participate in The Gashlycrumb Tinies Scavenger Hunt, inspired by one of Gorey's most famous books, recounting the grisly deaths of 26 youngsters in 13 rhyming couplets, which can be found hidden throughout the museum.
Tours will be offered at 12:00, 2:00 & 3:00pm. Please make sure to double-check your tour reservation time!
Advance ticket sales only. All ticket sales are final.
