Exploring Evergreen Cemetery

Explore one of L.A.'s oldest and most diverse graveyards, tucked away in Boyle Heights.

Established on August 23rd, 1877, Evergreen Memorial Park and Crematory became the first privately owned cemetery in the blossoming metropolis of Los Angeles.

Join writer and Atlas Field Agent Hadley Meares as we explore the sprawling grounds, secret histories, and fascinating residents of Evergreen Cemetery. As one of L.A.'s oldest nondenominational graveyards, the cultural landscape of Evergreen is incredibly diverse. Among the over 300,000 residents are pioneers, politicians, laborers, veterans, the city's homeless and unclaimed, and a community of over 400 circus performers (including the first human cannonball!). During the tour, you will hear stories about the communities, families, and prominent individuals resting here such as Isaac Lankershim, Biddy Mason, and William H. Workman. We will also tell tales of the living—murderous visitors, an on-site speakeasy, and wild Victorian ladies indulging a late night buggy race!

  • Meet in front of the cemetery office.
  • We will be walking through an old graveyard for about two hours. Please dress for the weather.
  • Please be respectful of services and mourners that may be in the park while we tour.
  • Bathrooms and water may not be available. Please come prepared.
