Hidden Wonders at the House of Balls

Celebrate the Atlas Obscura book launch with bands, brews and hands-on craft-making at Minneapolis' favorite funhouse!

Join us on October 22nd as we celebrate the release of the very first Atlas Obscura book: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders!

Come in for an afternoon of entertainment and discovery at Minneapolis' iconic House of Balls, a destination dedicated to the idea that “we all possess the creative impulse and we owe ourselves the balls to express it.” Keeping in strict observance of all things unusual and wondrous, our family-friendly book launch will be filled with live music, plentiful food and drink, and hands-on art workshops with sculptor and House of Balls founder Allen Christian.

The festivities will include an open beer and wine bar, and all attendees will receive their very own glittering new copy of the Explorer's Guide courtesy of Magers & Quinn Booksellers. Amid local bands, local beers, and local crafts, we'll spend the afternoon delving into the most astonishing and curious locations featured in the book with author and Atlas Obscura co-founder—and Minnesota native—Dylan Thuras. Such wonders include:

  • A fire that’s been burning in the Turkmenistan desert for 40 years.
  • Thousands of synchronized fireflies that inexplicably flash in unison in a cluster of mangrove trees outside Kuala Lumpur.
  • The self-mummifying monks of Japan.
  • The world’s only museum dedicated to displaying art made from human hair.

From the Glowworm Caves of New Zealand to the bioluminescent squid of Toyama Bay, Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders includes location information and tips on when and how best to get there—and how much to bribe the guard to get you inside. An immersive cabinet of curiosities that’s meant to inspire wonderlust as much as wanderlust by sharing places that could never be found without a tip from someone in the know, Atlas Obscura proves that the world is vast and there are marvelous treasures behind every corner—if you just know where to look.

Individual Ticket (includes Atlas Obscura book): $50
