How Are You, Imposters?

Tracing and tasting the origins of the ice cream soda.

Join The Franklin Fountain, Shane Confectionery and Atlas Obscura Society Philadelphia for a sweet reprise of a unique talk by their archivist, Laurel Burmeister.

Using a curious and bombastic Philadelphia broadside from the 19th century, visitors will wade into the murky history of the ice cream soda. Discover the sweet secrets behind turn of the century fountain culture, fraught with professional rivalries, grandiose self-promotion, and a healthy fear of ice.

Guests will also get a chance to taste two traditional ice cream sodas, all in the historic kitchens of America's oldest continuously operating confectionery.
