MacArthur Park

Experience an afternoon of historic architecture, forgotten public art, and hidden history.

On a swampy marsh in 1886, the City of Los Angeles began work on one of its greatest civic investments. Over the course of the next century, MacArthur Park would serve as a movie backdrop, poetic inspiration, and even a crime scene—all while retaining its distinctly Angelenian character.

On March 19, join Atlas Obscura as we explore MacArthur Park’s hidden history. We’ll trace the neighborhood’s origins as a Victorian vacation getaway through its time as a hub for the arts, and its eventual transition into a microcosm of the city’s diversity. Experience an afternoon of historic architecture, forgotten public art, and ghosts that still haunt the lake. Situated at the crossroads of time, MacArthur Park serves as both a window into Los Angeles’ past and a glimpse into its future.
