Memorials and Memories at Yanaka Cemetery

Take an intimate nighttime tour through Yanaka Cemetery and its nearby monuments.

Flush during the day with visitors who come to marvel at its April cherry blossoms, Tokyo's Yanaka Cemetery grows quiet after dark. The dead, however, still have stories to tell. This special nighttime tour will blend haunting and historic tales of a Tokyo long gone, beginning in Yanaka Cemetery and ending at nearby Nezu Shrine.

On Obscura Day, we will meet in front of Tenno-ji, just south of Nippori Station on the Yamanote Line, before meandering among the 7,000 graves. From the cemetery, we'll walk through Yanaka's back alleys past several Edo era temples, all of which survived WWII air raids. The tour ends at Nezu Jinja, one of Tokyo's most colorful Shinto shrines, but one that takes on a more ominous shade after nightfall.

  • Saturday, May 6: 6:30pm–8:30pm
  • Ticket Cost: 2500 ¥ (~$22.50 USD)
  • Meet at Nippori Station, in front of Tenno-ji (Tenno Temple). Use the south exit from the station.
