Mouraria Street Party

Join us for an evening of Afro-Lisbon food, live performance, song, and dance in the historic Mouraria neighborhood of Lisbon.

With a steaming Afro-Lisbon buffet and live performance by Angolan musician Chalo Correia and his band, this is a local street party you won't want to miss.

In Mouraria, tucked in the center of Lisbon, you might catch a whiff of Cape Verdian cachupa cooking on a stovetop and hear some Angolan kizomba music thumping from an open window. Along the windy cobblestoned streets below the castle, you’ll see laundry hanging to dry alongside scaffoldings of buildings in the midst of renovation.

Lisbon was once the center of a vast empire connecting Brazil in the west to Macau in the East. Though that empire crumbled bit by bit over centuries, the city remains an important point on the map in the former colonies—and thanks to this fact, the city is a vibrant and culturally diverse place.

Mouraria is still one of the most diverse parts of the city, but it is in transition as Lisbon undergoes major redevelopment. This event, produced by Culinary Backstreets, is part of an effort to celebrate the diversity of Lisbon and support its existence in Mouraria. This street party will feature live music and foods from the communities that live in the neighborhood. Our partner and host for the night, Ronovar a Mouraria, is a community center serving the needs of Mouraria’s residents. All proceeds for this event will be donated to Renovar a Mouraria.

  • Your ticket price includes: Exclusive access to the Afro-Lisbon buffet, and live performance by Chalo Correia, a leading Angolan musician in Lisbon, and his band.
  • All event proceeds will be donated to the Renovar a Mouraria community center.
  • There will be a cash bar at the event.
  • According to municipal regulations, the concert must end at 9PM, but the event may continue until 10PM.
