Obscura Society NY: Belle Époque Absinthe Tasting

Discover the tastes, truths, and tales of the Green Fairy elixir.

Surely you’ve heard the stories of the legendary Green Fairy, of l’heure verte (the green hour), of the effects of artemisia absinthium, or wormwood… But what’s the real truth behind absinthe, the legendary spirit about which so much has been written?

Join us for a fascinating, myth-busting talk and demonstration as Scott B. MacDonald, author of Absinthe Antiques: A Collection from la Belle Époque, reveals the facts behind the legend, using actual absinthe antiques used in 19th-century French cafés. Discover the thrill of preparing your own absinthe according to the traditional French ritual, and mingle with fellow Obscura Society members as you sip, discovering the truth behind this elixir for yourself. Scott will share three different brands of absinthe imported from France, and you’ll prepare and enjoy a glass of each using reproduction fountains, glasses, and spoons.

Costumes are encouraged: Get got-up in your finest Belle Époque Gibson Girl attire, dapper steampunk, or speakeasy chic, and come learn the true history behind this beguiling spirit.
