New York, NY

After-Hours at a Bookbinding Workshop

Go behind the scenes of a long-time Manhattan bookbinder's workshop with this special access tour.

Join Field Agent Rachael Mare for a very special, exclusive behind-the-scenes Atlas Obscura tour of the bookbinding workshop of independent bookbinder Judith Ivry.

Judith has been a bookbinder for over 25 years. After receiving her MFA from Syracuse University, she completed the Diploma Program at the London College of Printing. Among her many clients are book collectors, institutions, artists, publishers, and designers.

She’ll show us around her shop (in a quintessential Manhattan loft), discuss the heavy machinery and its uses as well as other tools used in her trade; show us samples of different book styles and special past projects she’s worked on (when we originally visited she was working on binding the original Gangs of New York screenplay), and demonstrate how she does gold decoration and titling on book covers. A wealth of information and a joy to listen to, Judith has taught and lectured on a variety of bookbinding techniques.

Very limited tickets available.
