Spend an evening in adoration and exploration of the power of the female image with musical performance, cocktails, and three lectures which consider depictions of women across time and cultures. Female artists and researchers reflect on their own explorations into the power of female icons. We'll explore the transforming imagery of women from religious iconography to erotica, pornography, and style, and finally examine the image of the witch in visual culture. Then be transported with the sounds of the Sirens of Jarana Beat. Let your mind be ignited and your soul moved as we celebrate the feminine with live music, cocktails, food, and deep investigation.
Curator, writer, magic practitioner, and brilliant creator of Phantasmaphile, Pam Grossman will guide us through the magical and transgressive power of witch imagery in Western art, exploring the shifting visions of these oft-demonized or idealized women as archetypes, muses, and themselves visionary artists.
Sonia Simoes, writer and erotica expert, examines the sexual revolution in the 1950s and 1960s which ostensibly gave women the freedom and means to assert and celebrate their sexuality. However, most illustrations of the newly "liberated" female at that time, from Hugh Hefner's Playboy Playmate to Bunuel's Belle de Jour, still sprang from the minds and cameras of men. Sonia will examine how artists like Bunny Yeager and Bettie Page sought to transform the image of the modern women in mid-20th century from sexual object to sexual agent.
Artist Polina Porras will talk about her project "Santa Agua", through the symbology of its main character: the Virgin of Guadalupe, whom she embodied in front of two churches in Mexico. She will explore the "birth" of this powerful Mexican icon as she dethroned the Pre-Hispanic goddess Tonantzin, incorporating ancient myth, fertility, apparitions, virgins, nature, miracles, corn bellies and clay legs.
