Obscura Society NY: Behind-the-Scenes at Puppet Kitchen

Get exclusive after-hours access to a Manhattan puppetry workshop!

Join Field Agent Rachael Mare for this behind-the-scenes tour especially designed for NY Obscura Society members only!

Hang out after hours in the Puppet Kitchen workshop with some of the silliest people you've ever met (I mean, they devoted their lives to puppets) and learn about different styles of puppetry (they do everything!). You'll get to know Monitor style (performing backward so that everything looks correct for the TV monitor) and Bunraku (traditional Japanese puppet theater that requires three puppeteers working one puppet).

You'll meet some of the designers' favorite creations, including Ginger (pictured) from the Disney television show Johnny and the Sprites, and get a chance to try your own hand at puppetry with any of the puppets on the walls of the shop.

Puppet Kitchen, a team of puppet designers and performers, has worked on puppets for The King and I and The Wiz for Maltz Jupiter Theater, Alice in Wonderland for the New York City Opera, Disney theme parks, PBS, and The Disney Channel.

Special bonus: As part of the tour, you'll get a sneak peek into a vintage opera house theater. The building that houses both the Puppet Kitchen workshop and the theater was originally an orphanage and dates back to the mid-1800s.

We had a blast with this event last time and came out feeling like we'd remembered what it was like to be a kid again. Don't miss out!
