Obscura Society NY: The Crypts at St. John the Divine

Journey into the atmospheric crypts of this truly impressive Gothic Revival beauty

An absolutely stunning structure, the Cathedral of St. John the Divine has seen continuous growth, construction and renovation since the very first cornerstone was laid in 1892.  With its spiral staircases, stained glass windows and elaborate architecture, the Cathedral is truly a sight to behold, from its deepest caverns to its greatest heights.

On this very special beneath-ground tour, we'll journey into the atmospheric crypts of the great Cathedral. Crypts are typically used for burials but at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, they are used for much more. Learn about the church’s architectural beginnings and how Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Guastavino Fire Proof Tiling Company were involved in its creation. Finally, we'll journey into a secret crypt chapel where Cathedral treasures are stored.
