Obscura Day 2015: Cypress Hills Taxidermy Studio

John Youngaitis takes the lost art of taxidermy and brings it back to life in Middle Village, Queens.

"I'll never be a millionaire doing this, but I get to wake up everyday and do what I love" said the taxidermist with a heart of gold about his family business.

For nearly 6 decades, the Youngaitis family has been perfecting the art of taxidermy. In 1958, John Youngaitis' father opened up the Cypress Hills Taxidermy Studio. John spent his childhood summers apprenticing with his father, learning the trade and soon becoming an expert in the field. In 2005, John took over the family business and relocated the studio to Middle Village, Queens.

John has worked on everything from sea animals to restoring a lion and making jackalopes. His showroom is full of beautiful pieces that he has worked on or acquired throughout the years, and each piece has its own story. Come join us for a tour and lecture about what John Youngaitis loves to do. Learn the craft of taxidermy from a top expert, and no - the eyes are not real!
