Obscura Day 2015: Strange & Cursed Histories - Griffith Park Part One

Join the Obscura Society as we hike LA’s most fascinating park!

Join KCET and Curbed’s Hadley Meares and Mark Hayward of Idea Monkey Inc, as we take an anthropological introductory tour of Griffith Park for Obscura Day!

As we walk a beautiful trail up to the famed Griffith Observatory, we will discuss the history of the park's native people, the curse of Rancho Los Feliz, the topography and foliage of greater Los Angeles, the strange and violent life of Griffith J. Griffith, the Hollywood sign and the construction of the Observatory and Greek Theater. We will see an air raid siren from WWII, and recount the history of the ruined Bird Sanctuary. Every step of the way there is scandal- from the suicide of Peg Entwistle to the forgotten Rancho Los Feliz love triangle which resulted in a murder on the property. We will explore iconic film sites at the Observatory using film stills, and there will be time to walk through the Observatory itself. There is so much to say—even the lampposts of Griffith Park have a story to tell!

Later in the day we will host Griffith Park Part Two- an exploration of the Eastside of the Park. Click here to purchase tickets to Griffith Park Part Two.
