This Obscura Day, head underneath the streets of Sacramento to discover the city's determined spirit and iron-willed past.
The Sacramento History Museum's Old Sacramento Underground Tour shows a city’s unusual survival against all odds. Born of the California Gold Rush, Sacramento faced one natural disaster after another until an unprecedented storm and flood threatened to wipe it out and ruin its plans for riches and railroad power. The city literally rose to the challenge by lifting itself up during the 1860s and ‘70s, and altering the landscape. Guides will share tales and introduce us to the people who met the challenge, while leading us through the subterranean spaces created by lifting massive buildings above flood level.
