Obscura Day 2015: The Sacred Caves of Bali

Join us for an exploration of Bali's sacred Hindu cave temples.

Discover a 9th- century sanctuary entered through the ornately carved mouth of a demon before visiting an ancient cave temple home to thousands of bats and a mythological snake king.

This Obscura Day, Bali Golden Tour will lead us on an excursion to two of the island's sacred sites - Goah Gajah and Pura Goa Lawah. We'll begin our day with a visit to Goah Gajah, "the elephant cave", an ancient temple with a frightening facade believed to ward off evil spirits, protecting the sacred site. We'll then pay a visit to Goa Lawah, one of Bali's nine major Hindu temples, housed in a massive cave that contains extensive tunnels yet to be explored. Receiving it's name from the thousands of bats that call the natural chasm home, it is claimed that Goah Lawah hides a river of sacred healing waters and a giant mythological snake king who spends his days feasting on the colony of bats that inhabit the cave.
