Obscura Day 2016: Birds of Prey at Prey Taxidermy

Join us at the Prey Taxidermy studio for a live taxidermy demonstration on birds of prey.

The taxidermists of Prey are honored to have the opportunity to share with you this unique art. They will be working on actual birds of prey (falcons, hawks, owls) from the Moore Lab of Zoology at Occidental University, a unique collection of over 60,000 bird specimens and an active research lab that uses DNA sequencing to better understand biodiversity.

These birds of prey died not for the art but from unavoidable and natural deaths. However, in death we can learn from them and celebrate these amazing creatures for all time through the art of taxidermy. This demonstration will include information on ornithology, skinning techniques, tools, specimen preparation, mounting as taxidermy and more. Attendees are welcome to take photos, videos and of course, notes. You will even get a chance to carefully handle the specimen if you so desire.

Allis Markham, award-winning taxidermist and owner of Prey Taxidermy, began taxidermy 2009. She began volunteering and training at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, earning a staff position at the museum in 2011. In 2014, Allis opened Prey Taxidermy in downtown Los Angeles, as both a studio to make her art and a classroom to teach taxidermy. Allis is now joined at Prey by taxidermists/artists Madison Rubin and Jennifer Hall — who are all excited to share their lively passion for this ‘dead art’ with you.

*All specimens have necessary federal permits through the Moore Lab of Zoology. Do not try this at home. Birds of Prey are federally protected.
