Obscura Day 2016: Damanhur and the Temples of Humankind

Join us for a guided exploration of the glorious underground temples of the Federation of Damanhur, a hidden eco-village that has been dubbed the 8th wonder of the modern world.

In 1975, Oberto Airaudi and a handful of followers began a labor of love: building a beautiful underground temple. Working together in four-hour shifts, the spiritually-minded cohort began secretly digging tunnels. When the Italian authorities finally discovered the construction project in 1992, they were stunned by what they found.

In only 15 years, the amateur architects had created an astounding space. The five-level temple complex is intricately decorated, containing a mirrored pyramid, gold-leaf ceilings, massive murals, detailed mosaics, and stained glass. Some of the ceilings are as high as 25 feet, and the entire construction is linked by hundreds of meters of snaking corridors. The connections between these halls are considered living conduits, with the ability to connect all the energies of humanity. A walk through the temples is said to correspond to “a profound journey inside oneself.” In this way, the temples function like a three-dimensional book, read across multiple planes of existence.

Staying true to Falco's original vision of a community based upon ethical and spiritual values, Damanhur has captivated attention around the world as a laboratory for experimenting with sustainable ways of living in harmony with nature and its elements and forces. On Obscura Day, we will explore the history and philosophy of Damanhur as represented through its art, stone circuits, altars and sacred spaces - a truly singular and spiritual journey.
