Obscura Day 2016: Memorials and Memories at Yanaka Cemetery

An intimate nighttime tour through Yanaka Cemetery and its nearby monuments.

Flush during the day with visitors who come to marvel at its April cherry blossoms, Tokyo's Yanaka Cemetery grows quiet after dark. The dead, however, still have stories to tell. This special nighttime tour will blend haunting and historic tales of a Tokyo long-gone, beginning in Yanaka Cemetery and ending at nearby Nezu Shrine.

On Obscura Day, we will meet in front of Tenno-ji, just south of Nippori Station on the Yamanote Line, before meandering among the seven thousand graves. From the cemetery, we'll walk through Yanaka's back alleys past several Edo era temples, all of which miraculously survived the WW2 air raids. The tour ends at Nezu Jinja, one of Tokyo's most colorful Shinto shrines, but one that takes on a more ominous shade after nightfall.
