Obscura Society DC: Madam on the Mall

Join us for an evening dedicated to the "madam" who presided over 19th century DC's classiest brothel - Mary Ann Hall

Take a step back in time with the Obscura Society DC and the Historical Society of Washington, D.C. as we indulge in sin, explore the legacy of the "Madam on the Mall," and uncover other debaucherous secrets of Civil War Washington.

Join experts and enthusiasts for an evening of talks, a scavenger hunt, and a chance to get up close and personal with authentic artifacts from Hall's brothel, which was unearthed during the Smithsonian Institution's 1997 archeological dig of the site.

Joining us for the evening will be:

- Amy Ballard, a senior historic preservation specialist at the Smithsonian Institution who helped lead the dig.

- Mark Herlong, an historian researching social history in 19th century DC, specializing in the brothels, saloons, and the opium dens of the District.

- The Historical Society of Washington, D.C., who will help guide us through the records, artifacts, and photos relating to Mary Ann Hall.
