Obscura Society LA: Exploring Evergreen Cemetery

Join us as we explore one of LA's oldest and most diverse graveyards, tucked away in Boyle Heights

Established on August 23rd, 1877, Evergreen Memorial Park and Crematory became the first privately owned cemetery in the blossoming metropolis of Los Angeles.

Join writer and Atlas Field Agent, Hadley Meares, as we explore the sprawling grounds, secret histories, and fascinating residents of Evergreen Cemetery. As one of LA's oldest nondenominational graveyards, the cultural landscape of Evergreen is incredibly diverse. Among the over three hundred thousand residents are pioneers, politicians, laborers, veterans, the city's homeless and unclaimed, and a community of over 400 circus performers (including the first human cannonball!). During the tour, you will hear stories about the communities, families, and prominent individuals resting here such as Isaac Lankershim, Biddy Mason, and William H. Workman. We will also tell tales of the living—murderous visitors, an on-site speakeasy, and wild Victorian ladies indulging a late night buggy race!

Stay connected! Subscribe to the LA Obscura Society newsletter and be the first to find out about upcoming events.
