Obscura Society LA: A Raptor Encounter with Master Falconer Vahe' Alaverdian

Escape Los Angeles and join Obscura Society LA for an unforgettable falcon adventure in the high desert

Diving towards their prey at speeds reaching 280 miles per hour, the peregrine falcon is the fastest living creature on earth.

Meet the masters of the sky, Pepper, Little East Texas Red, Shaman and Genghis, four members of Falcon Force, LLC, a team of raptors lead by Vahe' Alaverdian. They provide traditional falconry methods to control nuisance birds at vineyards, crop fields, airports, and landfills.

Vahe' Alaverdian is a Master falconer with 29 years of experience handling and training raptors. His passion for the sport of falconry started at the age of seven with a Eurasian Kestrel. He has been exploring the globe to study different methods of falconry in various cultures. His keen knowledge of wildlife, habitat and animal behavior, in conjunction with his acute falconry experience, allows him to assess and approach each situation, and apply proper falconry based bird abatement techniques best suited for the situation.

Join Obscura Society LA and Field Agent Erin Johnson for an up close encounter with four of Vahe’s majestic falcons, a Barbary, an Aplomado, and the infamous peregrines. Beginning at dawn, while the air is cool enough for the birds to fly, Vahe’ will give us a flight demonstration, showing off their flying skills, followed by a lecture about the ancient art of falconry and the practical use of raptors for bird abatement in a modern day landscape.

At the end of the lecture, there will be an opportunity for you to be photographed with one of these magnificent birds of prey on your arm!

Following our experience with Falcon Force, LLC, you are welcome to join us as we caravan 30 minutes south, listening to the finale of the William Tell Overture as we pass over the Civic Musical Road on our way to the Vasquez Rocks for a morning picnic. The early bird gets the worm! We will arrive just as their gates are opening.

Advice for this adventure:

1. Bring camping chairs. If you’d like to sit during the demonstration and lecture, you’re more than welcome to bring camping or folding chairs.

2. The flight demonstration will take place in the desert in an area with NO restrooms. We advise that you make a pit stop on your way in.

3. Bring a picnic breakfast.

4. Bring water. There is no drinking water at either location.

5. Bring sun screen.
