Go East, intrepid LA explorers! And raise a glass to the legends who ventured out to the farthest reaches of Hollywood, and made Los Feliz their home.
This area of LA's Eastside is famous for its nightlife, which dates all the way back to the Golden Age of silent movies – when Mack Sennett Studios and Prospect Studios were where you'd find the stars of the silver screen like Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields and Bing Crosby.
Join Field Agent Sandi Hemmerlein as we trace the path of movie stars and starlets from long ago, and celebrate the most obscure corners of this LA neighborhood! We begin our trek at the historic El Cid, whose building once was home to the prison-themed Jail Cafe, and end at The Dresden to witness the unforgettable musical performance of Marty and Elayne, who have been performing in that very spot for over 30 years.
Along the way we'll pass some hidden points of interest and learn a bit about LA and movie history!
We’ll belly up to the bar in these famed Los Feliz nightspots:
-El Cid – A flamenco supper club and bar for over 50 years, occupying the building of the former Jail Cafe, a 1920s prison-themed speakeasy. Also the neighboring property of a filming location for D.W. Griffith's The Birth Of A Nation.
-Tiki Ti– For over 50 years, this family business has served up over 90 of the most unique Tiki drinks, most of which can't be found anywhere else, with a history that can be traced back to the very first tropical bar in Hollywood.
-Good Luck Bar – A local watering hole around the corner from the Vista Theatre, a historic movie and vaudeville theater from 1923, featuring celebrity handprints and footprints in a Hollywood-style walk of fame in its forecourt
-The Dresden – A Hollywood landmark since 1954: one of the most recognizable filming locations from Swingers, and home to LA's underground musical sensation Marty & Elayne
