Obscura Society LA: Pasadena’s Portals

We go from the edge of the sky to the depths of the underworld on a Pasadena adventure to the JPL and Devil's Gate

Step into the unknown with Obscura Society LA and Field Agent Erin Johnson for a tour of Pasadena’s Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) and a hike to the Devil’s Gate.

Joined by special guest, Roy Butler, a team member of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission, this event promises a rare glimpse into the inner working of NASA’s leading center for robotic exploration of the solar system. Our tour will be led by a member of the JPL Public Services team, but Roy will join us for both segments of our excursion and will be more than happy to answer all of your burning questions!

Highlights of the JPL tour include 1) the Space Flight Operations Facility which serves as “ground control” for data communications to all deep space missions, 2) the Spacecraft Assembly Facility, where they perform spacecraft assembly and testing of JPL-built mission hardware, like the Mars rovers, and 3) the von Karman Museum.

What do NASA and the occult have in common? Jack Parsons. Following our tour of JPL, we will caravan less than a mile to the Hahamongna Watershed Park and begin our short hike through the Arroyo Seco to the Devil’s Gate. Famed occultist and co-founder of JPL, Jack Parsons, reportedly believed this gorge was one of the seven portals of Hell.
