Join the Obscura Society LA on a Cartwheel Art living history walking tour featuring the area's past, present, and future.
The east side of downtown Los Angeles was once a gritty section of the city filled with disused warehouses, train tracks and manufacturing plants by the L.A. River. But in the late 60s and into the early 70s, artists and other creative types began taking up residence in these abandoned buildings (often illegally) and turning this long-forgotten part of LA into a place unlike any other in the country. In 1981, the City of Los Angeles passed its "Artist in Residence" ordinance and thereby making this unique revitalization effort legal.
Over the past thirty plus years, the LA Arts District has seen a proliferation of art and community. For more information, click here.
This living history walking tour will be hosted by Cindy Schwarzstein, the founder of Cartwheel Art, an Arts District resident, a Los Angeles River Artists and Business (LARABA) Board Member, and a founding member of the Committee for the Advancement of Mural Proliferation (CAMP). Cindy has designed and led Arts District tours for the Los Angeles branch of the American Planning Association, the LA Art Show, and other groups.
She'll take us from the beginnings of this factory-clad neighborhood all the way to today with artists, historians, a gallery director and a brew master as our guest speakers. In other words, this isn't just a walking tour, this is a full-on integration into the culture of the community.
We will end our tour the same place where we will begin, Angel City Brewery, one of the sponsors for this tour. We will be given a tour of the historic building the brewery is housed in, the former offices of John A Roebling, the architect behind the Brooklyn Bridge.
Additionally, for all those over 21, we will have an opportunity to taste Angel City's newest offerings!
Notes for this adventure:
- This is a walking tour. Comfortable shoes are recommended.
- The tour will begin outside of Angel City Brewery, by the entrance, in the parking lot.
- There's no additional charge for sampling three of Angel City Brewery flagship beers, its part of your ticket, thanks to their sponsorship!
-The tour is open to all ages, save for the beer tasting at the very end where you must be 21 years of age.
