In this introductory session, we'll talk about the history of the Academy since its founding in 1847 and the Academy's early ties to New York's major public health issues. We'll look at the way the history of the Academy and the history of New York City are intertwined, and the Academy's influence on how the city has historically addressed the health of its citizens, especially in the areas of health care delivery, sanitation, maternal mortality, and drug regulation.
