SOLD OUT: For one very special night, Green-Wood Cemetery is giving us access to one of their usually off-limits secrets: the Catacombs.
Dating to the 19th century when the fear of being buried alive was rampant and with mausoleums at the height of burial fashion for the New York City elite, Green-Wood's long, tunneled burial space embedded within a hillside offered above-ground interment in its numerous vaults. The Catacombs are only one small part of Green-Wood's rich history, dating back to 1838 as the city's first garden cemetery, a place where the beauty of the burial grounds created a memorial where the deceased could be honored and the public could visit lost loved ones in peace and tranquility. Mausoleums by the leading architects of the day and soaring sculptures of angels and other figures of remembrance created by the best of 19th and 20th century sculptors all cluster around Green-Wood's winding tree-lined paths.
This year Green-Wood is celebrating its 175th anniversary and continues to be a place that is as much for the living as it is for the dead, a place to both mourn and to remember, while also being an open green space allowing the public to appreciate the cemetery's stunning landscape and memorial art. Join us as we make our way through Green-Wood's elaborate gates and maze-like pathways to enter this hidden and historic burial site. With Bess Lovejoy, author of Rest in Pieces: The Curious Fates of Famous Corpses, the lovely songstress Tamar Korn and an open bar featuring Sixpoint Brewery, New York Distilling Co., Sorel hibiscus liqueur and El Buho mezcal along with cocktails designed by Nathan Venard of Dutch Kills and Little Branch, we'll be hosting a celebration of autumn within the catacomb walls as we enter the darker time of year. Expect an atmospheric evening in the center of sprawling Green-Wood Cemetery and a rare opportunity to discover another side of this historic memorial space, far from the city lights.
Cocktail attire is encouraged; keep in mind that the catacombs can get quite chilly at night. We'll be heading fairly deep within the Green-Wood Cemetery grounds, so sensible footwear is recommended, as is a flashlight.
