Obscura Society NYC: Glittering Realms - Tour Greenpoint's Industrial Past

Explore the origins and history of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, where the East River mingles with the Newtown Creek.

Join us for an extensive exploration of Greenpoint, a thriving Brooklyn neighborhood that has risen from environmental catastrophe and an industrial past to be reborn in the 21st century.

Newtown Creek Alliance historian Mitch Waxman will be leading us on a walking tour through this ancient neighborhood and its past as a colonial center and 19th century industrial powerhouse.  This is an area that will be drastically altered by real estate development in the coming years; here is a chance to see what remains of Greenpoint's past before the neighborhood changes completely.

Bring your camera, as the tour will be highlighting the incredible landscape of the troubled Newtown Creek Watershed.

Please be prepared for rough terrain and possible heavy truck traffic.  Dress and pack appropriately for hiking and weather.  Closed-toe shoes are highly recommended.  Bathroom opportunities will be found only at the start of the walk.

DETAILS:

The tour will begin promptly at 10am.  Please be on time.
