Join Atlas Obscura and Timberland in Chicago for a two-part adventure on the urban frontier, where we will spend the day immersed in adaptive reuse and architectural upcycling.
On Saturday, August 13th, we're taking to the streets to explore some of the city's most innovative examples of architectural rebirth. After our tour, we'll head to the Rebuilding Exchange for a hands-on woodworking workshop that will give each participant the opportunity to take reclaimed building materials and create their own custom beer caddy.
The Windy City has upheld its dedication to maintaining the history of its old structures, even as they are renovated for new purposes. Our architectural tour will focus on questions and examples of adaptive reuse and "upcycling," a growing trend within environmental and eco-conscious architecture. Our group will meet at 2:30pm at the Timberland store, located at 625 N Michigan. From there we'll set out on a 90-minute walking tour, exploring several historic buildings that have been re-envisioned and reinvigorated with new aspects and features, while salvaging original materials, architecture and design.
After stopping for complimentary lunch and refreshments, attendees will be transported to the Rebuilding Exchange, a local non-profit that aims to create a market for reclaimed building materials. We'll receive a quick tour of their projects and studios before getting our hands dirty in the second part of our day's itinerary. With the help and guidance of Rebuilding Exchange's markmakers, you'll get to pore over salvaged materials—often from local torn-down buildings—to piece together your own personal wooden caddy to take home at the end of the evening. We'll wrap things up and shake the sawdust off our fingers at around 8:30pm.
This unique two-part event on the modern trail is part of Timberland and Brooklyn Brewery's Mash Tour, which focuses on urban art, culture, and exploration. Thanks to our friends at Timberland, all transportation, meals, materials and supplies for this experience will be provided for attendees free of charge.
