Strange Statues & Sci-Fi Sculptures

A sensory-saturated adventure into the world of surreal folk art.

Join Atlas Obscura for a day trip exploring outsider art and architecture with Field Agent Benjamin Harmon. Stops include a folk art taqueria and an outdoor sculpture park of giant pink robots and post-apocalyptic Christmas scenes.

Tio's Tacos 1 - 3 PM: One of our favorite commercial curiosities! Martin Sanchez, the owner and artist has elevated recycling to creative heights–both literal and figurative. He has created pyramids, whimsical fountains, and a series of giant wire figures filled with shells, shoes, toys, and other items. We will dine in their private back patio and explore the grounds.

Robolights 4 - 6 PM: An exclusive tour with artist Kenny Irwin Jr. of the sci-fi holiday spectacle, Robolights. As we are led through neon-saturated scenes filled with zombie-like children, cyborg reindeer, and aliens, we will learn about the different processes used to create what has become the largest residential light display in the United States. Robolights has been an ever-evolving work in progress for nearly 30 years and Kenny intends to continue working on it until he runs out of space, which could be sooner than expected. Kenny will also have some smaller artworks for sale including drawings and glass/resin skulls.
