Visit the Waller Creek Boathouse on Lady Bird Lake for incredible music performances, riveting conversations, outdoor excursions, lakeside views and an opportunity to learn about the science behind GORE-TEX brand products. At this two-day activation, join local ecologists, accomplished explorers, researchers, experts, and world-class musicians to expand your boundaries and experience Austin's natural wonders.

Drop by to enjoy lounging on the docks, our salon-style discussion on innovation in exploration, DJ sets, and live music curated by Ghostly International, or sign up for running, cycling and boating excursions with opportunities to try out cutting-edge gear featuring GORE-TEX product technology.

Certain activities will be open to the general public, while others will be reserved exclusively for SXSW badge holders. Review all the activities and RSVP below.

Kayaking on Lady Bird Lake.

Day 1: Wednesday, March 13, 2019

Get immersed in the city’s natural beauty with boating excursions led by local expert ecologists through the picturesque environs of Lady Bird Lake. Return to the boathouse at dusk, where you’ll dance under the stars to the electronic sounds of famed Ghostly artists including Ouri and Shigeto.

4:00–6:00 p.m. Bike Ride to Barton Springs

Grab a bike and explore Lady Bird Lake with GORE-TEX Brands, the Waller Creek Conservancy, The Trail Foundation and Barton Springs Bike Rental. We'll cruise around the lake on our way to Barton Springs with stops to see iconic Austin sites and discover natural wonders along the way. 

On a first-come, first-serve basis, as sizes permit, cyclists will be able to test GORE-TEX INFINIUMTM Stretch Gloves and jackets with GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY® product technology (weather permitting). Bicycles will be provided!

6:00–7:30 p.m. Sunset Bat Ecology Kayak

At sunset, kayak across the lake accompanied by Merlin Tuttle, the godfather of modern bat conservation, to witness as the local colony of Brazilian free-tail bats emerge from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. 

On a first-come, first-serve basis, as sizes permit, kayakers will be able to test GORE-TEX INFINIUMTM Stretch Gloves and jackets with GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY® product technology.

Join us for a lakeside run with GORE-TEX gear.

Day 2: Thursday, March 14, 2019

Get up with the sun to run the waterfront paths of Lady Bird Lake and try out cutting-edge gear from GORE-TEX product brands. In the afternoon, we’ll be joined by a group of great minds who are each creating astounding innovations that push the limits of human exploration, led in conversation by Atlas Obscura co-founder and bestselling author Dylan Thuras. We’ll cap it all off with ethereal performances by the renowned Ghostly harpist Mary Lattimore and Lonnie Holley.

8:00–10:00 a.m. All-Paces Trail Run at Lady Bird Lake

Join the amazing running community of Austin on the beautiful trails of Lady Bird Lake for an all-paces sunrise fun run departing from the Boathouse. Experience more on your run with the newest GORE-TEX running product technologies in shoes and jackets. We will run rain or shine, but we kind of hope it rains!

Borrow demo products on a first come, first served basis as sizes permit, including Salomon Running Shoes with light and flexible GORE-TEX Invisible Fit Product Technology, GORE-TEX INFINIUMTM Stretch Gloves and super light, packable GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY® running jackets (weather permitting).

Our evening showcase partners, Ghostly International, have curated a special edition of their Productivity playlist for runners in search of a soundtrack. The playlist begins slow to accommodate a warm-up, and gradually accelerates to a steady running pace. Find it on Spotify and Apple Music. For optimal playback, download in advance to make available offline.

9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. Open Kayak, Paddle Board & Drop-In Ecology Hours

We've partnered with Congress Avenue Kayaks to offer free morning boat rentals for our guests to head out and explore the waters of Lady Bird Lake. Stand up paddle boards will be available along with single and double kayaks. 

On a first-come, first-serve basis, as sizes permit, boaters will be able to test GORE-TEX INFINIUMTM Stretch Gloves and jackets with GORE-TEX SHAKEDRY® product technology.

Meanwhile at the Waller Creek Boathouse docks we'll be joined by a group of local ecologists from the Biodiversity Center and Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin onboard. These dynamic experts in local wildlife and wetlands will include Dr. Susan Cameron Devitt, Dulce Carbajal and Alison Northup, who will be on hand to highlight the hidden wonders of the natural world on land and on lake.

12:00 p.m.–1:30 p.m. Exploring the Elements: A Salon-Style Dialogue

Join us for a spirited discussion presented by Atlas Obscura and GORE-TEX Brands. Atlas Obscura’s co-founder and bestselling author Dylan Thuras will host a waterfront chat with groundbreaking artists, scientific researchers and specialized experts working to create astounding innovations that push the limits of human exploration.

A complimentary brunch of locally-sourced ingredients and custom cocktails will be served.
