Craft cheese and crafting! Atlas Obscura Society Portland has set up a hands-on evening of cheese tasting and wood burning—to make your very own craft cheeseboard.
First, the crafting: Participants attend an exclusive class led by Liz Wright, whose company Assembly PDX teaches modern craft and DIY workshops. Covering a variety of skills, these classes are pitched towards empowering creativity and piquing interest in new hobbies. This evening, Liz provides the skills and tools to craft a custom, premium wood cheeseboard to take home using the art of pyrography (don’t worry, it’s nothing illegal!). Although dating back centuries, this wood-burning art also can express contemporary designs. Using a pen-like burning tool, participants practice on small wood pieces to hone basic techniques before moving on to their masterpiece—a 13.5”x7.5” premium wood board to use for cheese, as well as general cutting. All supplies and equipment provided.
And, second: The class is hosted at Chizu, a stylish and intimate cheese downtown bistro. Along with the skill-building, the evening includes a cheese tasting hosted by Chizu, who bill their tastings as a “sushi-like experience for cheese lovers.” A sibling to the popular southeast Cheese Bar, Chizu is a fun downtown discovery.
