Seattle Obscura Society and Filson are teaming up for a special event with outdoor adventure journalist Peter Potterfield, Harriet Baskas – author of Washington Curiosities, and astrophysicist Anand Thirumalai. In this wide-ranging panel, our three guests will share their favorite weekend excursions around the Puget Sound and field questions from the audience on urban and outdoor exploration.
Journalist Peter Potterfield has written more than a dozen books on outdoor adventure. He has contributed to Outside, Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic Adventure and other major magazines. He helped develop online adventure reporting as editor of MountainZone.com and is currently editor of GreatOutdoors.com, where he writes his regular column Wilderness Notes. His book Classic Hikes of North America was published by WW Norton in 2012.
Dr. Anand Thirumalai is a faculty member at the Digipen Institute and an astrophysicist studying the atomic structure of stars and stellar winds. Dr. Thirumalai will share some of his favorite places in and around Seattle for observing the night sky and celestial objects.
Harriet Baskas' books include Washington Icons, Washington Curiosities, Stuck at the Airport, Museums of the Northwest, and (with co-author Adam Woog), Atomic Marbles and Branding Irons: A Guide to Museums, Collections and Roadside Curiosities in Washington and Oregon. Harriet will highlight explorations to offbeat locales (including the Giant Shoe Museum and the Drive-Through Tree) and share secrets of the Seattle airport.
