The Color and the Sound

A rebel from the Soviet Union, a banned film, a Denver-only event.

Sound and Screen meet in a stunning combination at this unique Denver experience.

Join Atlas Obscura Society Denver at the historic Oriental Theater for a live screening of The Color of Pomegranates, a deeply poetic and visually stunning film, from Soviet filmmaker Sergei Parajanov. Accompanying the film, a live music performance from Paul DeHaven, founding member of Denver's now-defunct folk darlings Paper Bird and high desert psych virtuosos Eye & the Arrow.

More about The Color of Pomegranates:

Director Sergei Paradjanov made a practice of making highly idiosyncratic films based on the folklore of regions in the former Soviet Union. In 1969 he made this film, based in part on the life of the 18th-century Armenian poet-monk, Sayat Nova.

Seriously out of favor with Soviet authorities (he was imprisoned in 1974 for his homosexuality, among other things), this film was not seen in the international arena until 1977. Then, The Color of Pomegranates was widely acclaimed for its poetic and non-narrative blending of historical and biographical Armenian imagery. -- Allmovie Guide

"Besides the film language suggested by Griffith and Eisenstein, the world cinema has not discovered anything revolutionarily new until The Color of Pomegranates..." -- Filmmaker Mikhail Vartanov

"Parajanov's Color of Pomegranates is of a stunningly perfect beauty. Parajanov, in my opinion, is one of the best film directors in the world." -- Michelangelo Antonioni

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 93% based on 14 retrospectively collected reviews, with an average rating of 7.1/10.
